My furniture originates in the specific circumstance
of each piece. Circumstances include the functional
requirements of the piece, the context the piece will
reside in and the materials of which it is to be made. Consequently,
instead of being an extension of an ongoing body of
work, each piece I do represents a fresh effort. I
work in a very deliberate way that includes drawings,
models and even prototypes. I am searching for
an aesthetic solution for each piece, which simultaneously
embraces efficient craftsmanship, effective use of
the material, durability and utility.
Until recently my furniture has been made entirely of
wood. Now I have expanded my range to include
some metal and plastic. Regardless of what the
particular material is, I have always considered the
material to be the central concern in my furniture. I
am concerned about the material’s structural properties;
how it looks; how it is shaped; how connections are made;
how it finishes and how it wears. These are concerns
that shape my designs while they are still in the conceptual
stage.
